Ukrainian cuisine is a reflection of the fertile agricultural land which it’s people use to grown their own vegetables for soups and salads. Winter is a time when the temperatures can drop to minus 25 degrees and this is when meat becomes the country’s priority.
Ukrainian food shares a lot of similarity in dishes with that of Russia. Some of the most popular shared dishes consist of pelmeni (a type of ravioli filled with meat or mushrooms), blinchiki (sweet or savoury pancakes), vareniki (dumplings with cabbage or mashed potatoes inside), and ikra (salmon caviar). Most meals are served with a bowl of borshch or some black bread on the side.I found some more information here.
The Ukraine is now a place where international as well as domestic ingredients can be found in many supermarkets. It’s not unusual at all to find the incorporation of western recipes into their cooking. No matter what changes have taken place over time, the Ukrainian people will always be proud of the food they offer.
Among the most commonly served ‘everyday drinks’ found in the Ukraine would be tea, coffee and juice. Water is a problem as tap water is not fit for consumption even after purification. Kyivans drink tea with lemon, berries and herbs.
The variety of alcoholic drinks available is vast and unique. Many of the recipes by the Ukrainian people have been around since ancient times. The desire to create different tastes led to the creation of a multitude of new collections of wines and brands of strong drinks. Home-made wines are popular and generally made from grapes, berries and fruit grown locally. One of the finer wines made locally called “Zolotiy Vil” would leave even the most refined connoisseur impressed.
Other alcoholic drinks commonly served consist of cognac, champagne and vodka. Vodka is one of the strongest drinks available and is better when consumed with food and good company.
Food and drink in the Ukraine is an experience in itself especially when shared with the hospitable people that make up this wonderful area.
